The Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that it is warning about the potential risk of Viagra and the generic versions of the drug in the United States.
The agency also asked the Food and Drug Administration to alert consumers about the increased risk of the side effects associated with Viagra and other drugs, including the brand-name drug, Cialis.
“These drugs, including Viagra, are indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

“The risk of side effects associated with these medications is a major concern,” said Woodcock.
The warning came just days after a group of scientists from the Food and Drug Administration, led by Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, who led a project to determine whether the side effects of sildenafil, Viagra and Cialis are serious enough to put consumers’ safety at risk.
The group, led by researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, led by Dr. Jennifer Rosenblatt, led a research project that involved a group of scientists from the University of California Los Angeles.
“It’s very important that doctors and patients who take these medications, and all who suffer from sexual dysfunction, find ways to make sure they are taking these medications as directed,” Rosenblatt said. “We need to ensure that our patients get the medication they need.”
Dr. Kavaler said that although the Food and Drug Administration’s drug safety review was inconclusive, she said, the agency asked her to submit a letter to the FDA, which said that the risk of adverse effects associated with sildenafil, the brand-name drug, is very low.
She did not return a telephone message.
Viagra, which is sold as Revatio and Cialis, was approved in 2003 and was the first drug to be approved for erectile dysfunction by the FDA. The FDA approved the drug in February 2011.
Viagra is a member of a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, and the drugs work by inhibiting the action of these enzymes in the body. The FDA said it is not clear how many of the drugs are associated with side effects, but it is not clear whether they are severe enough to put consumers at risk.
In a letter to the FDA, Dr. Kavaler said that while the risks of the drugs are very low, they can be severe, particularly if the patients take high doses of the medications.
She also said that while this information may raise awareness of the drugs, she said, the risk of serious side effects can be greatest with the drugs.
Sildenafil, the brand-name drug, has been shown to interact with a variety of other drugs, including other medications for heart problems.
“This information is concerning the risk of serious side effects associated with these drugs, including a possible risk of liver problems,” Woodcock said.
The drug’s safety has been evaluated by the FDA since 2006, and it is not clear whether it is associated with serious side effects.
Kavaler said that the FDA’s review did not find any adverse effects associated with the drugs. She also said that the FDA has not yet determined whether the side effects are severe enough to put consumers at risk.
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Revatio, is approved for use in men only and does not treat erectile dysfunction.

On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the erectile dysfunction medication Cialis. When marketed asCialis Together(tadalafil 10mg), it will be a ‘P’ (pharmacy) medication, and so available ‘over the counter’ in pharmacies – see. This follows the 2018, ‘P’ classification of (sildenafil 50mg) which has been available OTC, without a prescription, since then.

UK Border Force and the MHRA seize millions of pounds of these fake products from criminals annually. This new classification of tadalafil 10mg will enable men who suffer from ED to obtain it safely from a local pharmacy.
Sanofi, the drug manufacturer, is expected to launch Cialis Together later in 2023. Cialis Together will be available to purchase in pharmacies without a prescription by men over 18 with erectile dysfunction. Cialis Together tablets will contain 10mg tadalafil and the maximum pack size will be 8 tablets. Other doses and pack sizes of Cialis and tadalafil will still be available on prescription through doctors and specially trained pharmacists. Before purchase in a pharmacy there must be an assessment with a pharmacist, who will check that Cialis Together is appropriate and safe, or whether consultation with a GP is necessary.
Men suffering with ED will have another treatment option with the convenience of purchasing it in their local pharmacy, including pharmacies found inside supermarkets (eg. Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s). The pharmacist will ask some health questions, may check blood pressure, and will advise on treatment with Cialis Together or Viagra Connect, or the need to consult a GP. Pharmacies usually have a private room for such discussions.
Cialis Together is a 10mg tadalafil product for use at least 30 minutes prior to anticipated sexual activity. Its effects can last. It is not recommended for daily use. The maximum recommended dose of Cialis Together will be one tablet in 24 hours. Prescription Cialis and tadalafil will still be available at different doses.
